Vision

Plant genetic resources are conserved and sustainably utilized thereby contributing to poverty alleviation, social equity and environmental enhancement in the ECA sub-region.

Mission

To harness, conserve, and to promote greater use of plant genetic resources for food security, improved health, and socio-economic development of the rural communities of present and future generations.

Goal

To develop sufficient capacities in participating countries of the sub-region for effective conservation and sustainable utilization of the plant genetic resources (PGR) as part of the broader vision of achieving food security, economic growth and sustainable agriculture and development.

Objectives

To promote the sub-regional collaboration and networking through exchange of information and material, research and development, capacity building, adoption of common approaches and methods, and regional integration in plant genetic resources activities.

To ensure that all countries in the sub-region fully benefit from the active crop-based and thematic regional and international networks

Core values

• Conservation and sustainable use of Plant genetic resources (PGRs)
• Value addition to PGRs
• Regionality
• Collaboration, partnership and synergy
• Use of comparative advantages

Activity Areas

EAPGREN has three main activity areas namely capacity building, research activities and Plant Genetic Resources (PGR) support services.

1. Capacity building includes development of operational and effective national PGR programs, support to countries to develop minimal conservation facilities, & equipment, assistance in conservation of ex situ collection and development of human resources.

2. Research activities mainly focus on objectives that address national or regional plant genetic constraints including adding value to germplasm, to make it more useful for enhancement and breeding program; advancing the science of PGR conservation and utilization and development of methodologies

3. PGR support services comprise the development of a compatible regional PGR information and documentation system as a platform for scientific exchange, information sharing, and technology transfer; strengthening linkages between plant genetic resource conservation and use and; raising the level of awareness of the importance of PGR conservation at scientific, public, and policy levels.

Medium Term Plan

  • promote regional collaboration in identification, priority setting and implementation of PGR activities though establishment of a network of national programs.
  • build capacity for greater research output in priority areas as identified by national programs and the network thematic working groups.
  • enable the countries of the sub-region to optimally conserve and use their plant genetic resources by strengthening national programs particularly the improvement of the coordination mechanisms in the implementation of the PGR activities.
  • develop and adopt complementary conservation methods and strategies including ex situ on-farm, in situ approaches for the conservation of PGRs.

  • facilitate the participatory utilization of PGRs through establishing linkages between conservation and utilization at the formal and informal levels.

  • support human resource development through training of a minimum complement of staff for PGR responsibilities in each country.

  • strengthen PGR documentation and information services for the region.

  • advocate policy changes and to increase the level of public awareness and support for PGR conservation and use.

Expected outputs

  • An operational regional PGR network developed
  • Well coordinated national PGR programmes developed and operationalized in member countries
  • Research methodologies for the exploration, inventory, conservation, characterization and evaluation of PGR developed and applied
  • Germplasm collected and/or conserved through ex situ and in situ methods
  • More germplasm accessed by users and utilized in crop improvement and enhancement programs
  • Critical mass of trained personnel involved in national programmes at different levels available
  • A compatible regional information and documentation system developed and used
  • Increased awareness about PGR at all levels
