How ASARECA is strategically aligned to continental agenda
ASARECA has committed itself to focus on four thematic areas in a new ASARECA Strategic Framework that is well aligned to the major ongoing regional and continental initiatives. By committing to deliver on these thematic areas, ASARECA is well positioned to contribute significantly to the implementation of the major regional and continental frameworks.The following are key areas in which ASARECA will support and complement Agricultural Research and Development at sub-regional and continental levels:
Support to member states
ASARECA will provide support to the 11 member states and strategic projects outside member states in the implementation of the CAADP 10-year Results Framework and the complementary African Union Malabo Declaration on accelerated African agricultural growth and transformation (A3GT).
As a constituent of FARA, ASARECA will work closely with FARA and other regional and continental initiatives to support the implementation of the Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA); the Science Agenda for Agriculture in Africa (S3A); the Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT) programme; and the African Agricultural Research Programme (AARP) that are continent-wide initiatives aligned to the Feed Africa Strategy for agricultural transformation in Africa.
Support to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS)
ASARECA will partner with other relevant regional, continental and global initiatives to deliver the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) particularly SDG2 that seeks to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture by 2030; and the CGAIR Centres/Commodity Research Programmes particularly in the implementation of the TAAT and AARP Programmes.
Support to COMESA
In its capacity as a sub regional organization, ASARECA will provide technical support to the agricultural sector and related strategies and policies particularly the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) in its support to implementation of CAADP and in the promotion of market access. We will invest resources in strengthening and harmonizing quality, health and safety standards of products and services as an important component of the regional competitiveness strategy.
Backstopping the EAC
We will work with the East African Community (EAC) in the implementation of its Agriculture and Rural Development Policy (EAC-ARDP) which provides the framework for improvement of rural livelihoods through increased productivity, improved food security, and providing an enabling environment for improvement of trade.
Support to IGAD
ASARECA is seeking to support Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in carrying out its mandate of promoting sustainable agriculture development and food security, conserving, protecting and improving the quality of the environment, ensuring prudent and rational utilization of natural resources, and harmonization of policies in scientific and technological research and development, transfer of technology and capacity building in science and technology.
