RAIN will facilitate and support 15 kinds of activity: - Undertaking inventories of existing resources.
- Analysing training needs.
- Reviewing and developing training resources.
- Holding skill-enhancing courses for ICM professionals.
- Sensitizing policymakers and senior managers.
- Producing newsletters and journals.
- Managing ASARECA and RAIN Web sites.
- Promoting ASARECA and RAIN products and services.
- Facilitating the development and packaging of information.
- Initiating improved access to scientific and technical information (STI).
- Facilitating cooperative arrangements for information exchange.
- Determining information needs and products for different user groups (as a basis for developing national agricultural information strategies).
- Developing an ECA agricultural information strategy.
- Holding a region-wide study to explore the revenue-generation potentials of selected agricultural information products and services.
- Developing region-wide information technology (IT) and information and communication management (ICM) standards.
These activities will result in 15 corresponding types of output: - Metadata of resources held at different institutions with links to the RAIN Web site.
- Identification of IT and ICM skills gaps.
- New training resources.
- Enhanced IT and ICM skills among agricultural information professionals.
- New commitments from policymakers and senior managers to further development of agricultural information.
- A newsletter (AgriForum) and other periodicals.
- Enhanced ASARECA and RAIN Web sites.
- Increased knowledge of ASARECA and RAIN products and services.
- Agricultural information products for targeted groups
- Programmes giving scientists improved access to STI.
- Memoranda of understanding and memoranda of agreement for joint acquisition of information and partnership with major players.
- National information strategies in each of the 10 eastern and central Africa (ECA) countries.
- A regional ECA agricultural information strategy that provides a basis for regional and national policymaking.
- Marketing plans for selected information products and services.
- Guidelines on IT and ICM standards.
