ASARECA General Assembly approves new Board of Directors
The ASARECA General Assembly has approved the appointment of a new ASARECA Board of Directors. The General Assembly convened on May 2nd, 2019, ahead of the ASARECA Summit of patron Ministers on May 3rd at Speke Resort Munyonyo, unanimously agreed that the Board of Directors was well constituted.
Explaining the composition of the new Board, ASARECA General Assembly President, Prof. Joseph Bigirimana said, representation of critical ASARECA constituents in the governance of the institution had been accomplished in the new structure.
“The new ASARECA Board of Directors comprises five categories of sectors. These include representatives of: National Agricultural Research Institutions (NARI) representatives; the Regional Economic Communities (RECs); the CGIAR; Development Partners; and sector representatives including the Private Sector, NGOs and Universities.
The following are the new Board of Directors by category:
- Ambassador Dr. Kipyego Cheluget—Representative of the Regional Economic Communities.
- Dr. Robin Buruchara—Representative of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
- Dr. Yona Baguma—NARI Representative, National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) Uganda.
- Dr. Geoffrey Mkamilo—NARI Representative, Tanzania Agriculture Research Institute (TARI).
- Dr. Hussein Abubakr—NARI Representative, Agriculture Research Council (ARC).
- Eng. Dieudonne Nahimana—NARI Representative, Institut des Sciences Agronomiques du Burundi (ISABU).
- Dr. Yirga Tizale Chilot—NARI Representative, Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR).
The other representatives appointed to the Board were from Sectors that are critical to AR4D. These include:
Representative of Farmers Organisation—Asst. Professor Bol Andrew Wieu Riak, Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development at the Upper Nile University (UNU).
Representative Higher Education—Prof. Patience M. Mshenga, Chairperson of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Management at Egerton University.
Representative Private Sector—Ms Regina Kayitesi; Marketing Manager, Chamber of Agriculture and Livestock/ Private Sector Federation (PSF), Kigali, Rwanda.
Representative Agricultural Extension Services—Ms Elysée Mvumbi, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer at the National Extension Service, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Representative—NGOs, Mr. Eric Hermann Raparison, National Coordinator of the Civil Society Platform working in the land sector Sehatra Iombonana an'ny Fananantany (SIF).
