Mr. Mohamed Hussein is the Director General of the Department of Plant Protection and Research, Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, Somalia, a position he assumed in August 2019. He is an agricultural engineer with a strong background in organic agriculture. Mr. Hussein has an M.Sc in Mediterranean Organic Agriculture from the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute, Bari, Italy; a  B.Sc.in Agriculture from Cairo University, Egypt, with emphasis on Organic Agriculture. He also has a Postgraduate Diploma in Entomology. Prior to becoming the Director General, he served as a senior Plant Protection Officer at the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation. Mr. Mohamed Hussein participated in the development of various agricultural policies for fertilizer and pesticides; laws for agrochemicals, seeds and variety, plant protection and quarantine; and led the establishment of the Somali Agricultural Regulatory and Inspection Services. Furthermore, he worked towards the establishment and implementation of the seed certification system in 2020, developed the seed sector guideline for Somalia in 2021 and led the establishment of the Central Seed Testing Laboratory (2020-2022). He also conducted performance trials for local and introduced crop varieties in both rain-fed and riverine areas in (2021- 2022).
